The oil filter housing on modern VAG engines does not allow the previously common removal plates to fit under the filter and divert the oil to an oil cooler fitted elsewhere on the vehicle. Instead they now use an oil cooler 'block' bolted to the front of the engine, and in many cases an undersized filter or paper blob in the element, which prevents the easy fitting of an oil cooler. As many people have found, if the vehicle is tuned, or towed with a heavy load, oil temperatures can burp, with oil temperatures in excess of 120 deg C (250 deg F) easily reached, which is close to the point where engine oil starts to break down.

The oil cooler removal plate replaces the oil to the water cooling block, and whilst it still allows coolant to circulate, more importantly it gives two M22 knockouts which when fitted with the appropriate adaptor, allows the fitting of oil cooler lines between -on6 and -on10 in size (not supplied -on6) which can then be attached to an external oil cooler. Oil temperatures are stabilised, and engines can be run harder for longer.
